Minnesota Thunder News Release

ST. PAUL, Minn. (Wednesday, April 27, 2005) – Minnesota Thunder's all-time leading goal scorer, Amos Magee, announced his retirement today as a player for the Minnesota Thunder USL First Division pro soccer team. Magee will remain with the club as an assistant coach for the 2005 season, and will be inducted into the Thunder Hall of Fame in 2005.

"I had planned on winning the league championship and retiring," said Magee. "Although that didn't happen last year, I'm now excited about winning it as a coach."

"Famous Amos" Magee, the longest active member of the team, tallied 64 goals and 39 assists in over 180 games in his professional career. He played on the 1993 US Maccabiah team, winning the bronze medal. Magee played seven games with the Tampa Bay Mutiny of Major League Soccer (MLS) in 2000, and was on-loan to the Chicago Fire of MLS in 2002.

"Amos has been an outstanding asset to this team," said head coach Buzz Lagos. "He has been here since the beginning and both he and the Thunder have grown together. The Thunder is his passion and he has always gone the extra step to see the team succeed. Amos will leave the playing field as a Thunder champion."

In Magee's 15 years, he has been a leader; not only on the team, but also in the community coaching in the Thunder's summer soccer camps and in clinics year round. As the head coach at his former high school, St. Paul Academy (SPA), and as a coach that holds a USSF ‘A' license, Magee is looking forward to furthering his coaching career after playing.

"I'm excited about being able to spend some extra time with SPA and in the community developing young players," said Magee. "St. Paul is my home and I want to see others with the same opportunities that I had."

Magee has connected with fans over the years through a column he wrote on the Thunder website by revealing things about himself from life experiences and through thoughts on coaching the US youth team in the 2003-04 Pan American Maccabiah Games. Magee will also be an assistant coach for the US men's team at the 2005 World Maccabiah games held in Israel in July of 2005.

"I want to thank the Thunder organization for its support, as well as my long time coach Buzz Lagos," said Magee. "Most importantly, I want to thank the Thunder's faithful fans for making this the perfect environment to spend my playing career."

Magee will make his first exclusive appearance as an assistant coach at the Thunder's season opener in the Metrodome on May 7 at 7:05 p.m. Tickets are available by visiting www.mnthunder.com or by calling 651-917-TEAM.
