. . . and then there were 10.

The self proclaimed "fastest growing basketball league," the Central Basketball League is now down to 10 team from their high of 22 in early January. Within the last week they have removed the Kansas City Attack, the Atlantic Crowns, and the three teams in West Virginia including the WV Angels (yes, the team that was thrown out of the PBL). Many of these teams were promoted as bring stability to the League when they came on board over the last month and half. How many will be left by the first game in April is anyone's guess.

No surprise. CBL is basically ABA without giving Joe Newman a "market reservation." However, that might actually be an improvement, but not by much.

League run by a guy who ran 12 paid tryouts for an ABA team then didn't play any actual games there. 4 Louisiana teams ran by the same couple who's only team in ABA went 0-3. After their last game, they had a facebook posting looking for 5 more players for their team. If you can't run one team at all, there's no way you can run 4 teams (even if 2 are travel-only teams).

The team owners he got were all bad by ABA standards. I wonder if a few of the others found out just what they were getting into. At least they can say they aren't out the "market reservation" fee.

While the league has no League Fee they do have fee's for uniforms and the radio broadcasts (found this out while chatting to a former owner). Seems to me that it would have been a better plan to charge teams $2,000 upfront and then pay for the uniforms and radio fee's out of that. It would have kept out those who couldn't afford it and would have ensured that all teams paid so you didn't have dropouts later. (*Radio fees are $40 per month plus $75 per game split by the teams playing).

If you go to their radio site (wbad.com) you will see that 2 of the teams from the Louisiana ownership group still havent paid thier radio fees. If I were to guess, those 4 teams will be out by the begining of the season. I figure that the will also loose one other somewhere (it may be the Dream as they havent recruited players yet). I would guess they will start with 5 teams in April if they make it at all.

Its tough to run a league as a one man show, and be a team owner, and be a coach.

Mark Hadden Now Gone

Post by zeke41 »

The latest removal:

http://www.centralbasketballleague.com/ ... efinitely/

So from like 25-30 teams to what...8? Or still 10, but only 5 owners? 4 in Louisiana are owned by one person, 3 in FL (or maybe 4...can keep it straight) owned by one person, etc. so that's 8-10 teams and only what...5 owners owning multiple teams? This is where the entertaining drama is that we all love folks!

I'm sitting here thinking wow, if I was stupid and we didn't vet people, this would be us.

Avion Hale wanted back in the FBA. We said no. He went CBL, and is now gone.

Mark Hadden wanted in the FBA. We said no. He went CBL, and is now gone.

Ben Mireles wanted in the FBA. We said no. He went CBL, then became owner of CBL...and is now up a creek and losing his paddles day by day.

The Panama City Dream wanted to play in the FBA. We said no. They are now CBL. Are they next?

In all seriousness...I just can't stand ignorant, under-funded, no leadership-having people doing stuff like this. I told everyone we have talked to that the FBA is the only minor professional league to consider in Florida. This garbage just makes it so much harder for us, especially when it comes to sponsors. It's very difficult to take minor league basketball seriously when stuff like this happens. I just feel bad for the players. I know a couple of guys who drank the CBL kool-aide and left FBA teams to play in the CBL. It sounded good a month ago with 25 teams spread throughout the eastern region. No matter how great a team operates, if the league is poorly led, you're fighting an uphill battle. You can't win.

Now that we are controlling our own "league" destiny a bit, the Florida Flight is doing great. Digital billboard, 52 season tickets sold in the first week of our drive, etc. Why anyone would draw the conclusion that they can come to Orlando and impact Orlando above us??? I have no clue. Oh well...at least this train wreck is...entertaining? In some sick, negative way? SMH

Check their League Standings section on the front page... One of the Louisiana teams is gone.

So now the count is 9 (or 7).

I'd be interested to hear what those players that left the FBA are saying now. I'd expect they realize that stuff is pretty messed up.

I don't see the league surviving the season. The Dream and the Saints havent updated thier facebook page or websites that actively. I tend to think that a lack of activity means that stuff isn't happening. I would also think that the Warriors or the Lions (or both) will be defunct shortly. When you look at the schedule (got to go to FB for that, they haven't posted it on the website) you see that they Florida team have almost completely cut out the teams from Louisiana except for the "traveling team" (p.s. could someone define what a traveling team is?).

While there may be only 5 team owners, the bigger concern I think is that there is only one league owner. The CBL would be better off if it were a group of people looking out for each others interests. Instead you have a super ego trying to dictate to others how things will be run. He is trying to run it like a kingdom and not a team effort. It is great that he has big dreams, but he is selling his dream to players and owners while not having anything real to back it up.

We shall see . . . .

Now...this was the league that one guy started...and then sold, right? (Am I remembering that incorrectly or thinking of another league?)

If that's the case, that guy might be ( a ) the smartest guy in the room and ( b ) the only guy to make money in minor league basketball!
Old enough to remember when bashing the ABA was fun.

He says he sold it, but...more like gave it away. If he DID sell it, it wasn't for much. The buyer couldn't have had much money to make the deal happen. And if it did? I wouldn't chalk it up to him being the smartest guy in the room...more like the buyer has to be the dumbest on the planet. Buy a league where the 4 original teams leave so you have to start from scratch? Why would you buy that? Just start a new league.

Definitely entertaining fiasco though. I wish I Greg Kite's and my conversation with him. Totally arrogant. It's funny...he went on and on how we don't know how to get fans in the stands so he was going to show me how it's done in Orlando. Pretty hilarious...I didn't even argue with him about it. Preferred to answer with actions.
P.S., Could someone define what a traveling team is?
In the TRBL, a traveling team is one that is approved by the league to play in league games but has no home venue and thus only plays on the road.

The Big Texas and Bull City Legacy teams worked their way into the TRBL that way.

No guarantee that's what it means in this league, but it could be that.
