New England Pharoahs

Post by Dan K » Sun Aug 30, 2009 5:42 pm

It looks like the Salem (NH) Phantoms nickname is a "phantom" team name. The proposed Salem-based team in the new North East Professional Hockey League is now the New England Pharoahs [www.pharoahshockey.com].

The NEPHL nickname did appear to conflict with the Adirondack Phantoms (AHL) and Youngstown Phantoms (USHL) hockey teams, but I am not sure that is why it was changed.

The conflict was with the New Hampshire Phantoms Soccer program based in Salem, this is on there site:

About Us

The Phantoms franchise was born in 1996 after the Canadian Soccer Association prohibited the Montreal Ramblers from playing in the US based USISL. The franchise moved to New Hampshire but lasted just the 1995 season. Then owners Jim Dedeus and John Motta began a brand new franchise the following year. The Phantoms had a successful entrance to the league finishing 9-7 in the Pro League's Northern Conference. In 1997, the Phantoms reached the National Semi-finals and went one better in 1998 when they lost in the National Final in overtime.

In 2006, the Phantoms fielded a men's Pro Soccer League team, the Lady Phantoms W-League team, and 11 Super Y League teams which are for youth players age U13 through U20. The Phantoms are also the NH Soccer Associations state camp provider and conduct camps and clinics throughout the state year-round.
