Shreveport-Bossier Captains News Release
The Shreveport Sports have announced the resigning of Chad Gambill for the 2006 season. Gambill led the Central League and Sports with 23 home runs last season and his 78 RBI's was best on the club last year. The 23 home runs matches the most home runs hit by a Shreveport player since the opening of Fair Grounds Field in 1986. Benji Simonton hit 23 home runs in the 1996 season with the Captains.
Among the 23 home runs hit last season by Gambill, two cleared the (blue monster) centerfield fence. He was the first player to ever hit two over the centerfield fence in one season.
Gambill was originally a sixth round draft pick of the Colorado Rockies in 1993 and made it to the Rockies AA team at New Haven in the Eastern League in 1998.
Gambill is an outfielder, but because of shoulder problems last year was used primarily as a designated hitter for the Sports.
This brings to 20 the number of players signed by the Sports for the 2006 season as spring training will start the final week of April with the home season opener set for May 16th at Fair Grounds Field.
