Wolfpack Look to Smother Firehawks Friday
April 14, 2010 - Continental Indoor Football League (CIFL)
Wisconsin Wolfpack News Release
April 15 (Madison) - The Wisconsin Wolfpack (1-1) look to get back on track against the Fort Wayne Firehawks (1-1) Friday night at the Allen County Veterans War Memorial Coliseum. The game begins at 6:30 p.m. CT. The game features two teams that look to be going in opposite directions. The Wolfpack are coming off a 48-26 defeat to the undefeated Cincinnati Commandos while the Firehawks beat the winless Miami Valley Silverbacks, 44-28.
Wolfpack rookie quarterback Dan Roberts was harassed all day by the Commandos defensive line in his first professional start last week. Roberts wasn't helped by the fact that Cincinnati shut down the normally potent Wolfpack running game, holding Eric Donoval to eight yards on just six rushing attempts. Former University of Cincinnati star quarterback Ben Mauk threw for six touchdowns, four of those going to his former Bearcat teammate, Dominick Goodman.
Meanwhile, the Firehawks seem to have found their way last week. Kota Colors, playing in his first game with the Firehawks following an injury to Adam Gibson, completed 17 of 30 passes for 200 yards and seven touchdowns. Colors added 49 yards rushing on eight attempts. Wide receiver Justin Wynn caught seven passes for 114 yards and four scores in the victory.
The Wolfpack attempted to shore up the quarterback position this week by signing former Wisconsin Badgers quarterback Matt Schabert. Schabert had success with the Chicago Slaughter of the
Continental Indoor Football League (CIFL) in 2007. In just five games, Schabert threw for 12 touchdowns with only three interceptions and rushed for another eight touchdowns. The Wolfpack hope Schabert can provide a spark similar to the one Colors supplied for the Firehawks last week.
The Wolfpack ranks last in total offense and defense in the CIFL. The Firehawks enter Friday's game ranked second in total offense and third in total defense. The Wolfpack are averaging 32 points per game on offense and the Firehawks are allowing nearly 42 points per game. Meanwhile, the Firehawks offense is averaging nearly 36 points per game, second in the CIFL. Their defense ranks second-to-last, allowing nearly 42 points per game.
The Wolfpack hold two distinct advantages in the game. Former Badger Josh Nettles is leading the league in kickoff return average. The Wolfpack also hold an advantage in turnover margin where they are plus-one while the Firehawks are minus-five on the season.
The game will be carried live on the CIFL Radio Network with Don Wadewitz and Dan Pfeifer beginning at 6:15 p.m. Fans can listen to the game through the Wisconsin Wolfpack website at http://www.wiwolfpack.com/indoor.
