Portland Forest Dragons News Release
DURHAM, N.C. â Brockton's Campanelli Stadium and Lincoln's Haymarket Park were chosen Friday as the best playing surfaces in the Northern League by a vote of league managers and media.
The award is presented by Daktronics, Inc., and is the first end-of-year award to be handed out. A number of other post-season awards, including the Daktronics All-Star Team and Player of the Year, will be released at the end of the regular season.
Tom Hassett is responsible for upkeep of the field.
Built in collaboration with the city, the 4,750-seat facility was constructed just in time for the 2002 season, the city of Brockton's first in the Northern League and first professional team since 1915.
Campanelli Stadium broke the four-year run of Yogi Berra Stadium in New Jersey as the East's best field.
Haymarket Park was chosen Friday as the best playing field in the Central by Daktronics, Inc., for the second consecutive year.
The second-year facility is the home of the Lincoln Saltdogs and the University of Nebraska Cornhuskers baseball team.
"It's a great honor for my staff of Jennifer Roeber, Sam Ord and the game day crew," turf manager Dan Bergstrom said. "It reflects on their hard work and the cooperation we've received from the city of Lincoln, the University of Nebraska and especially the front office of the Saltdogs."
Prior to the 2001 season, Bergstrom arrived in Lincoln from the University of Kentucky where he won the STMA Collegiate Diamond of the Year award for the best college baseball field.
"Dan and his crew put forth a tremendous amount of effort for the entire facility, "Saltdogs general manager Tim Utrup said. "It is great to see their hard work recognized with this award for the second year in a row."
Daktronics is a nationally known manufacturer of electronic scoring and informational display equipment including LED video replay boards. The Brookings, S.D., company can be reached at daktronics.com.
