SY Dawgs Drop Series to Charge with 5-3 Loss

July 25, 2016 - National Pro Fastpitch (NPF) News Release

Conroe, TX- The Dawgs finished their final game against the Charge in a home field three-game series in Conroe.

The Dawgs came out swinging in the first inning with a double up the middle from Nerissa Myers. In the second, it was Amanda Fama who stepped in with a hit through the 5-6 hole to start the rally. Emilee Koerner laid down a sacrifice bunt to move Fama into scoring position. Lexi Overstreet delivered up at the plate with a shot through the middle to score Fama from second (1-0).

A home run from the Charge's Ashley Burkhardt tied the game in the top of the third (1-1). A Renada Davis attempt to steal third resulted in an overthrow from May Whitley, allowing Davis to score on the error (2-1). A single in the 5-6 hole from Lauren Haeger would score Taylor Gadbois to put another run across for the Charge (3-1).

In the bottom of the fourth, Fama sparked the Dawgs offense again with a single to left field. This brought in a pitching change for the Charge, substituting Lauren Haeger for Jill Compton in the circle. What seemed to be déjà vu from the second inning, a selfless move from Koerner in the form of a sacrifice bunt moved Fama over, followed by an RBI single over the second baseman's head from Overstreet, bringing Fama home once again (3-2).

In the top of the fifth, Rachel Fox gets relief from Sara Driesenga, along with Taylore Fuller behind the plate to replace May Whitley. A double in the right-center gap from Kylee Lahners would score Davis, who walked, and Gadbois, who reached on an error (5-2). With bases loaded, Kaylyn Castillo comes to the plate and reaches first on a fielder's choice, but not without Fama flipping the slow roller to Fuller at home, stopping another run and getting the second out. A strikeout to Kaitlyn Richardson ended the side.

The Dawgs stayed disciplined in the fifth as Kiki Stokes took a free pass to first base, her second on the day. Myers stroked a hard liner over the shortstop's head to score K. Stokes, who reached second from a grounder by Breja'e Washington earlier in the inning (5-3). Fama took a free pass herself to first, but a pop up from Koerner would end the side.

Defensively the Dawgs were sharp in the top of the sixth as Fama recorded all three outs in a 1-2-3 inning to flip the side. Another pitching change was made for the Charge to Morgan Melloh for Haeger in the circle.

In the final inning, Driesenga shut down the bats of the Charge, forcing both Davis and Gadbois to ground out for the first two outs. A double from Lahners would bring Monica Abbott to the circle to relieve Driesenga. Abbott takes the Dawgs into the bottom of the seventh by getting Haeger to fly out to second baseman Myers. The Dawgs continued to fight back in their last at bats, but it was not enough as the Dawgs end the series 1-3.

The Dawgs will travel to Myrtle Beach, South Carolina on July 28th to face the Rebellion in a three-game series. First pitch is scheduled for 6:05 ET. BOX SCORE
