Louisiana Swashbucklers News Release

LAKE CHARLES LA.- In a hard fought contest with plenty of offensive fireworks to go around the Louisiana Swashbucklers wind up on the losing end of a 45-42 slugfest to the Columbus Lions. The Bucs fall to 0-3 while the Lions even up at 2-2.

In what may have been an omen of the outcome the Lions scored on an uno to start the game. Not until later did the Bucs get points on the board when defensive back Brandon Robinson intercepted a pass from Lions quarterback Marcus Jones. Robinson took it to the end zone on a 46 yard run. The opening quarter ended on a 7-1 score.

The second quarter had more offense to speak of. It started with a 34 yard field goal by Columbus. Not long thereafter a pass caught by Louisiana's Willie Pritchett lead to a touchdown run by quarterback Chris Mitchell. Columbus scored twice as wide receiver Jarmon Fortson found paydirt on a long pass from Jones and defensive back Jeremy Gray intercepted a Mitchell pass and scored. Jones scored on a keeper a short time later. Louisiana retaliated with a down the field bomb from Mitchell to Cortland Bell of which Mitchell took it to the end zone himself. Bucs defensive back Kenny Kitchen picked off a Jones pass and was off to the races when he fumbled the ball and Columbus recovered. The first half ended with Louisiana in the lead 21-14.

The second half started with a pass from Jones to wide receiver Maurice Dupree for a score. A throw from Mitchell to Bucs wide receiver Jordan Rideaux gave Louisiana good yardage on the field. After

that Mitchell put it in on the next play. The Swashbucklers was pulling ahead as Kitchen intercepted a pass from Jones making the score 35-21. But the Lions refused to buckle as Dupree caught another pass from Jones. Though Sammy Knight for Louisiana caught a long range laser from Mitchell a penalty killed the play. A field goal from kicker Ernesto Lacayo went no good. Still, Louisiana had a lead at the end of the third period with a 35-28 lead.

But, the run of luck would favor Columbus. The score was tied on a one-yard run by Jones to start the fourth. Dupree would strike again eight minutes later with another touchdown. Now the scoreboard read 42-35 Lions. As the clock continued to tick away Bell pulled in from Mitchell another scoring pass of his own. Louisiana got the score tied again 42-42 with about seven minutes remaining in regulation. After a series of offensive exchanges between the two teams lasting for about five minutes Columbus kicker Geoff Boyer broke the tie with a 30-yard field goal as two minutes remained on the game clock. Louisiana attempted one last scoring drive but was unsuccessful in the effort.

The Swashbucklers will return to action on Saturday, April 20th, in the Lake Charles Civic Center against the Knoxville Nighthawks.
