Wisconsin Wolfpack News Release
MAY 15 (MADISON) - Matt Schabert and Eric Donoval were named CIFL Players of the Week for the weekend of May 8 on the league website, ciflfootball.com, early this morning.
Donoval, a second-year running back out of UW-La Crosse, won the Offensive Player of the Week award after accumulating 99 total yards and five touchdowns in the Wolfpack's 44-18 win over the Chicago Cardinals last Saturday. Three of Donoval's scores came in a dominant first quarter for the Wolfpack (5-1), including a 30-yard catch and run off a swing pass from Schabert to make the score 22-6. Donoval finished the night with nine carries for 50 yards and three rushing touchdowns, along with four catches for 49 yards and two receiving touchdowns.
Meanwhile, Schabert, who threw for three touchdowns and 196 yards on 15-of-26 passing, took home the Special Teams honors. With regular Wolfpack kicker Tony Smidl absent to attend his graduation ceremony at UW-Platteville, Schabert volunteered to drop-kick extra points for the Wolfpack and converted on three of his six attempts. The former University of Wisconsin quarterback converted his first two point-after tries, while one of the misses came when Schabert's kick struck a roof support beam at the Odeum Sports & Expo Center just prior to going through the uprights. By rule, a kick touching any part of the ceiling before going through the uprights is no good.
A Wolfpack player has now won each of the CIFL's Player of the Week awards in 2010. Schabert and Donoval join Kurt Ware, a second-year defensive end from Wisconsin, who has won the Defensive Player of the Week award twice, and Smidl as Wolfpack award-winners.
With the win over the Cardinals (0-6), the Wolfpack clinched a playoff spot, marking the second time in the two-year history of the indoor franchise the Wolfpack have reached the post-season.
The Wolfpack begin a three-game homestand tonight against the Miami Valley Silverbacks (1-6), whom the Wolfpack defeated, 38-32, in the first game of the season for Wisconsin. Kickoff at the Hartmeyer Arena is scheduled for 7 p.m. with tickets available at wiwolfpack.com/store.
