SaberCats Bring Back Nine Players, Add Three More for 2016

(SAN JOSE, Calif.)- The San Jose SaberCats have exercised options on nine rookies from last season, while also adding three players to its roster.

The defending ArenaBowl Champions have been assigned center Matt Armstrong and rookie defensive back Lavelle Westbrooks and wide receiver Cordell Roberson.

San Jose will also bring back wide receivers Diondre Borel, Mike Willie and Brandon Collins; defensive linemen Chris McAllister, Damien Borel and Gustave Benthin, as well as defensive back Fredrick Obi and offensive lineman Viondy Merisma.

Armstrong (6'2", 310 pounds) played in five games for the SaberCats in 2014 including three starts. Prior to the AFL, Armstrong spent time with the New Orleans Saints. He played collegiality at Grand Valley State, earning First Team All-Great Lakes Conference honors three years. In 2013 Armstrong was awarded the Rimington Award for the best Division II center.

Westbrooks (6'0", 195 pounds) was the Cincinnati Bengals' 7th round pick in the 2014 NFL Draft and also spent time with the Buffalo Bills. Westbrooks started 41 games at Georgia Southern, totaling 167 tackles, 20 passes defensed and seven interceptions.

Roberson (6'4" 215 pounds) spent time with Cleveland Browns, Carolina Panthers and Buffalo Bills before joining the SaberCats. Roberson played collegiality at Stephen F. Austin, setting school records in receptions (221) receiving yards (3,191) and touchdown receptions (39). In 2012 he hauled in 77 receptions for 1,006 yards and 10 touchdowns.
