Detroit Drive News Release

NASHVILLE (Sept. 15, 2005) - Nashville Kats WR/LB Darryl Hammond has been named to the Arena Football League's 20th season historical committee, the AFL announced today.

Hammond is on the eight-member panel that will help honor the league's 20th season by selecting, among other things, the 20 greatest players, games, moments, teams and highlights in AFL history.

Hammond is joined by a diverse mix of AFL personalities all with a strong knowledge of the league and its history, including Howard Balzer, a journalist who has covered the AFL since its inception; Hunkie Cooper, a former player and current assistant coach who holds the record for career all-purpose yards; Mike Hohensee, the head coach of the Chicago Rush who has been involved in the league either as a player or coach in each of the previous 19 seasons; Joe Kauffman, the president of ArenaFan Online; George LaFrance, a former player who won five ArenaBowl championships; Bill Niro, an AFL founder; and Gene Nudo, an Arizona Rattlers executive who's career has spanned 19 of the AFL's 20 seasons.

Hammond, who was named to the AFL's All-Ironman team after the 2005 season, has played 15 years in arena football, marking the longest tenure of any player in the history of the sport. He began his career with the Albany Firebirds in 1991, and he has also played with the St. Louis Stampede, Georgia Force and Austin Wranglers, in addition to his two stints with the Nashville Kats. Hammond is a free agent, but is expected to re-sign with the Kats in a few weeks when the free agent signing period begins. He and lineman James Baron are the only two players to have played with the Kats franchise in all six seasons of its existence. Hammond is one of only two players in AFL history to have notched 8,000 receiving yards and 30 interceptions. His 8,459 receiving yards are ninth-most in arena football history and his 780 receptions make him eighth on the career-best list. The former Virginia Cavalier ranks third, all-time, in the AFL with 631.5 tackles.
