Trenton Freedom News Release
LANGHORNE, Pa.- Saturday's Trenton Freedom Fan Experience gave fans an opportunity to see what's in store for the team's second season.
Head Coach Kevin O'Hanlon held open tryouts for the 2015 squad on the red turf. The NFL-combine-like setting tested over 40 athletes of various positions from different parts of the country.
"I was encouraged by the 40 guys working to earn a spot on our roster," O'Hanlon said, "But what was great was we had over a dozen guys fly or drive in from Ohio, Oklahoma, Florida, Virginia and Texas. I think that says a lot about the direction of our organization."
After the tryouts, fans got an opportunity to watch a sneak preview of the high-speed indoor football action they'll see beginning in late March. The All Star Incorporated Developmental Football League championship game was played between the Tri-State Tropics and the ASI Panthers.
The Tropics, led by coach and former Freedom quarterback Steve Panasuk, defeated the ASI Panthers 58-43. The victory showed a result of hard work and progress made throughout the ASIDFL season.
"Hats off to ASI for a [heck] of a game and running a great league," said Panasuk, " I want to thank my players, coaches, and all the support of family and friends for this season. We got 11 guys signed to pro teams this year. After playing pro ball for 3 years, to give guys an opportunity and teach the game is what development leagues should be about."
The Freedom sold tickets, merchandise and the newly released dance team calendars to fans in attendance at deeply discounted prices. Players from last season's team, along with those new to the roster, signed autographs. From top to bottom, there's was excitement brewing throughout the organization.
"It was great to see the support we had at this event in our second year," said Assistant General Manager Will Schubiger. "I'm excited to get our season started, and I know our fans are too. I hope they show it at the games as much as they did [Saturday]."
O'Hanlon agreed with Schubiger about the importance of the fans' support.
"[The fans] are our 9th man," the second-year head coach said. "The players love them and we need them. I can easily see our support growing. The fans are a massive part of our organization and our success and I wish it was possible to thank each fan individually. They mean that much to us."
