Georgia Fire News Release
ROME, GA (June 11, 2014) - This Saturday, the Georgia Fire (3-6) of the Professional Indoor Football League (PIFL) will play host in a rare visit from the Lehigh Valley Steelhawks (4-5) with both clubs looking to end their longest losing streak of the season.
It's that time of year when football teams are molded into champions. It's do or die time, either you're a team hungry for a playoff spot or just another pretender making off-season plans. Come Saturday, the loser of the contest between Georgia and Lehigh Valley will be one-step closer to booking off-season vacation plans.
For Georgia, they certainly could use some help. Losers of three four straight, the Fire need a win on Saturday coupled with a Lions loss for any hope of remaining in the playoff hunt. First- place Nashville clinched one of the two available American Conference playoff spots last week in their 73-39 demolishing of Georgia.
The Fire will have to sweep out their remaining three games of the regular-season, including a season-finale meeting against Columbus set for Friday June 27th . But the young expansion club must not look too far ahead with the equally hungry Hawks waiting in the wings come Saturday.
Like Georgia, Lehigh is currently on their longest losing streak of the season having lost five straight watching their great 4-0 division leading start dwindle down to 4-5 and will now have to play for second fiddle for the National Conference's second seed. Last week the Hawks blew a 21 points second half lead only to let Richmond score 22 unanswered points to close out the game for the 38-37 victory.
Offensively, it has been a struggle for the Hawks. Last season's All-PIFL 1st Team QB Adam Bednarik's numbers are down from a year ago having thrown just 23 passing touchdowns compared to 32 TD's from a season ago. Bednarik has also been sacked a league-high 24 times this season and 54 times combined over the past two years while the Steelhawks pass offense has lagged to the lowest passing offense mustering just 176 yards per game.
Loads of action in the PIFL this week and you won't want to miss two teams coming down to the playoff wire be sure to contact The Rome Forum Civic Center box office at 706-291-5281 for great ticket options. Kickoff is at 7:30 pm and listeners can stay tuned by logging on to www.georgiafire.us and clicking on the The Jock Listen Live icon.
