Grand Rapids Drive News Release
GRAND RAPIDS - Feb 10, 2017 - In a game with 26 lead changes, the Grand Rapids Drive (18-17) ultimately outlasted the Erie BayHawks (10-23) at home on Friday night by a 105-102 final. The Drive inched ahead with a strong third quarter and a good start to the fourth quarter, and held off Erie's late push for the narrow win.
The Drive pushed their record above .500 for the first time since Jan. 6 when they were 11-10, keeping them closer to the playoff race.
Kevin Murphy scored 29 points with nine rebounds for the Drive and Jordan Crawford added 23. Two assignees from the Detroit Pistons, Henry Ellenson and Michael Gbinije, each had 15 points, with Ellenson also adding 11 rebounds. It was the Drive's fifth win in a row with Ellenson and Gbinije on the roster.
The Drive had their worst three-point shooting night of the season, connecting on just 5 of 28 attempts. Despite the poor shooting from deep, the Drive managed to be relatively efficient overall, shooting 48 percent from the field overall on the night.
The BayHawks were unrelenting on the offensive glass, as they pulled down an incredible 26 offensive rebounds to stay in the game despite shooting just 37 percent from the field and 19 percent from three-point range. Branden Dawson had nine offensive rebounds on his way to 21 points and 15 rebounds. Gabe York chipped in 28 points and eight rebounds and TJ Price scored 20 points.
Erie also grabbed 15 steals to just three for the Drive, as the BayHawks only turned the ball over 10 times, but they could not do quite enough to overcome the overall disparity in shooting. The Drive had 54 points in the paint on 27-of-43 shooting, one of their best interior scoring performances of the season.
The Drive will take on the Maine Red Claws on the road on Feb. 12 for their next contest. Erie also takes to the road for a tilt with the Fort Wayne Mad Ants the same day.
