Daytona Beach Hawgs News Release

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. -- So how are the Daytona Beach Hawgs doing at the halfway point of their inaugural season? Here's a self-evaluation, and fans can voice their opinion with the TUI Business Machines poll on our homepage.

QUARTERBACK – After taking one game to get used to everybody – Oscar Davenport has been a solid signal caller for the Hawgs in the first half. Struggled against Rome, but proved he can match the best offenses in the league with the scoring shootout against Miami. Hawgs haven't been able to put away teams with their offense, but the defense steps up when needed. Half a letter-grade deduction for the guys who threw five picks at Lakeland: B+

RUNNING BACK: Brad Lee started off like gangbusters, but has slowed down the past two weeks. Needs to get back on track. B

RECEIVERS: Robert Bailey just may be having his best season. He's stepping up and making the plays when the team needs them. Lucas Greene has been quiet by Lucas Greene standards, but has the catch-to-touchdown ratio. Erie Williams may not have Bailey or Greene's stats, but he has the knack to make the key third down or fourth down catch. And Tarion Hubbard makes the most of any opportunity he gets when one of the big three aren't playing. B+

OFFENSIVE LINE: The Hawgs have the Hawgs up front. Tommy Moody, Terrance Butler and Steve Canidate have helped make Brad Lee one of the league's top rushers and have let Davenport be sacked only five times. A+

DEFENSIVE LINE: Stats don't lie: John Bowman leads the league in sacks, forced fumbles and tackles for losses. The Hawgs lead the league in total defense. Leon Moore and Robert Lewis complement him quite. Sam Small has made the most of a second chance. B+

LINEBACKER: Levar Simms stepped up and has become one of the league's top tacklers. B

DEFENSIVE BACKS: The Hawgs secondary has scored almost as many points as the New Jersey Xtreme. Nick Allison is having a career season, Micah Simmons makes big plays, Bobby Bass and Marcus Washington provide the leadership: A

SPECIAL TEAMS: The kicking game sucks. Tim Viens, who has replaced Stephen Brown, has made a respectable 70 percent of his PATS, but field goal kicking, well, moving on to returns... Robert Bailey has scored on both kickoffs and missed field goal returns. Excellent job: Separate grades here. F/ B+

COACH/GENERAL MANAGER: Ervin Bryson has successfully merged his players with the Daytona Beach talent. Smartly relied on the running game until Davenport got his groove back. Monteray Evans has concocted a great defensive scheme. The Hawgs' gameday operation and media coverage is the one of the league's best. [Editor's Note: Bryson gave himself a B -- we upgraded it] A-

HONORARY A's go to TUI Business Machines CEO Zack McDonald for his field sponsorship and the radio shows, Ryan Charlick for his video editing, Jimmie Salter for his PA work, Chad Smith and Rick Hamilton at the Ocean Center for their support, Bob Schmitt at Compugenie for making this web site as cool as it is and the Harleigh Girls -- the best dance team in the league! A+
