
Bighorns Take Down the Energy

DES MOINES, IA ---- The Reno Bighorns (4-10) defeated the Iowa Energy (2-12) 104-101 Friday night at the Wells Fargo Arena in Des Moines, IA.
Sacramento Kings Affiliate Player Lamar Patterson led the Bighorns with 33 points, eight rebounds and two assists while Will Davis II logged a near double-double with 19 points and nine rebounds. Reggie Hearn notched 11 points, six rebounds and two assists as Isaiah Cousins poured in 10 points, grabbed nine rebounds, added four assists and two steals.
JaKarr Sampson paced the Energy with 22 points and eight rebounds while Memphis Grizzlies assignee Wade Baldwin IV had 18 points, five rebounds and four assists.
The first quarter was a tightly contested back and forth battle that saw five lead changes and three ties. Both teams would see a triple and a two-point shot to be knotted up at the 9:00 mark. The Bighorns held a one point lead mid-way through the frame before the teams remained scores for over three minutes. With the game tied at 14 with 1:57 to play in the first quarter, the Energy went on a 11-4 run to end the first frame leading the Bighorns 25-18.
The Bighorns controlled the second quarter, winning the frame 26-18. The Energy led the Bighorns by eight points with 5:21 to play in the first half after triples from Dunham and Sampson. The Bighorns went on a 12-1 run behind a three from Hearn to tie the Energy at 38 at the 2:22 mark. The Bighorns edged the Energy 43-42 before the Bighorns would control the lead after Renaldo Major made two at the line to hold a one-point advantage going into the locker room at the half.
Davis scored 13 of his 19 points in the first half behind a 5-7 shooting effort.
The Bighorns emerged from the break to outscore the Energy 31-25 in the third quarter. The Bighorns pulled away by as many as eight points in the opening minutes of the first frame until the Energy tied the game at 57 mid-way through the frame. The Bighorns went on a 9-1 run behind a triple from Patterson to have an eight-point advantage with 4:00 to play in the third. The Bighorns held a seven-point lead over the Energy heading into the final frame.
After a three-pointer from Whisnant in the first minute of the fourth quarter, the Energy rallied, making it a one-point game at the 6:00 mark. Pe'Shon Howard scored a jumper to give the Bighorns a two-point advantage before the Energy took control of the lead after a free-throw from Sampson and triples from Baldwin and Whisnant. Patterson hit a lay-up followed by a three from Hearn to give the Bighorns a two-point advantage with 2:52 in play. The Energy responded with a triple from Perry Jones and a lay-up from Baldwin to again control of the lead. The Bighorns kept the Energy scoreless for more than a minute to take back the lead they would never relinquish.
The Bighorns will return to the Reno Events Center on Wednesday, Dec. 21 to face the Austin Spurs at 7 pm. Fans who a non-perishable food donation at the Reno Events Center entrance will receive a free ticket to the night's contest.
