
Bighorns Come up Short in Austin

CEDAR PARK, TEXAS ---- The Reno Bighorns (0-3) fell to the Austin Spurs (2-1) 106-97 Thursday night at the State H-E-B Center in Cedar Park, Texas.
Malachi Richardson, who is on assignment from the Sacramento Kings, led the Bighorns with 27 points and five rebounds while Chane Behanan had 18 points and seven rebounds in the Thursday night contest. Kings affiliate player, Lamar Patterson tallied 16 points, four rebounds, two assists and four steals.
Patricio Garino paced the Spurs with 24 points, eight rebounds and five assists while Jarell Eddie added 14 points and eight rebounds for the Spurs.
The first quarter was a tightly contested battle that saw seven lead changes. The Bighorns would take a 7-3 lead in the opening minutes of the first quarter behind a triple from Patterson and layups from Georgios Papagiannis and Isaiah Cousins. The teams would keep the score tight throughout the quarter keeping the score within five points of each other. The Spurs would win the frame 27-24.
The Spurs would open the second quarter going on a 10-2 run to have a 33-26 lead over the Bighorns with 9:55 left in the first half. The Bighorns would respond with a 7-2 run to close the deficit to six with 3:30 left in the first half. The Spurs would keep their pace closing out the first half with a 55-48 advantage over the Bighorns.
Coming out of the break, the Skal Labissiere would dunk in the opening minutes which would be followed by a triple from Richardson to bring the Bighorns deficit to five with 9:02 left in the third quarter. The Bighorns went on a 10-2 run behind a three from Kadeem Jack, bringing the score to 74-71. At the 1:39 mark, Richardson would sink two free throws after being fouled by Charles Garcia, tying the game at 77. The Bighorns would win the frame 30-27.
In the final quarter, the Bighorns would go on a 9-2 run spurred by a three from Richardson to lead the Spurs 87-86 at the 9:32 mark. The Spurs would retake control of the lead after a jumper from Livio Jean-Charles. The Spurs would never relinquish the lead, defeating the Bighorns 106-97.
Richardson would notch 13 of his 27 points in the second half behind a 4-9 Shooting effort.
