Bighorns Come up Short in Arizona

PRESCOTT, AZ ---- The Reno Bighorns (2-7) fell to the Northern Arizona Suns (7-1) 130-106 Saturday night at the Prescott Valley Events Center in Prescott, AZ.

Malachi Richardson, who is on assignment from the Sacramento Kings, led the Bighorns with 23 points and added two rebounds behind a 7-11 shooting effort while Kings assignee Skal Labissiere tallied 15 points and nine rebounds. Kings affiliate player Lamar Patterson followed Labissiere followed closely with 15 points and seven rebounds.

Derrick Jones paced the Suns with 21 points and six rebounds while Elijah Millsap added 21 points two rebounds and five assists for the Suns.

The first quarter was a tightly contested battle that saw ten lead changes and three ties. Bighorns' Renaldo Major would set the tone early with a triple in the opening minutes of the frame. The two teams would keep the score close until the Bighorns pulled away after back-to-back triples from Kendall Marshall making it a 13-8 game at the 6:00 mark. The Bighorns controlled their lead until the Suns went on a 10-2 run to have a 29-24 lead heading into the second quarter.

The second frame was a low scoring affair with the Suns outscoring the Bighorns 19-18. The Bighorns opened up the frame going on an 8-1 run behind eight combined points from Patterson and Richardson giving the Bighorns a 34-31 lead. A 9-2 run would re-claim the lead for the Suns mid-way through the quarter. Arizona would finish the half on top, sending the Bighorns into the break at a four-point deficit despite Marshalls 11 points in the second frame.

Coming out of the locker room, the Suns went on an 8-0 run to take a 55-43 lead. The Bighorns would chip away at the Suns lead, getting within nine points before the suns would hold a double-digit advantage over the Bighorns the remainder of the third.

The Suns would preserve control of the game throughout the fourth quarter. Chane Behanan and Richardson combined for a total 21 points in the final frame.

The Bighorns will travel to El Segundo to face the LA D-Fenders on Thursday, Dec. 8 at 7:30 p.m. PST. Before returning home to host the Iowa Energy on Friday, Dec. 9 at 7 p.m. Tickets for the contest will begin at $12.
