Bighorns Comback Attempt Falls Short in Hidalgo

HIDALGO, TX ---- The Reno Bighorns (0-1) fell to the Rio Grande Valley Vipers (1-0) 112-103 Sunday night in their season opener at the State Farm Arena in Hidalgo, TX.

Sacramento Kings affiliate player, Lamar Patterson, led the Bighorns with 23 points, eight rebounds and seven assists. Malachi Richardson, who is on assignment from the Kings added 22 points and seven rebounds while Georgios Papagiannis, who is also on assignment from the Kings, contributed 15 points and four rebounds.

Isaiah Taylor paced the Vipers with 24 points, five rebounds and seven assists as Kyle Wiltjer added 22 points and seven rebounds for the Vipers.

The Vipers would jump out to a three point lead early in the opening frame before the Bighorns would come back to edge the Vipers at the 9:30 mark. Both teams would trade buckets for the remainder of the first quarter, with the Vipers entering the second quarter with a 32-13 lead.

The Vipers would maintain their advantage over the Bighorns entering the second quarter. After the Bighorns went on a 9-2 run, they would close the deficit to 57-31 with 2:25 remaining in the first half. The Bighorns would lose the frame 29-22 trailing the Vipers 61-35 going into the locker room at the half. Skal Labissiere, Papagiannis and Patterson netted four points each in the quarter.

The Bighorns would open the second half going on a 6-0 run behind jumpers from Cousins, Labissiere, and Papagiannis. The Bighorns rallied back going on a 15-4 run mid-quarter followed by Richardson sinking a three with 48 second remaining in the frame. The Bighorns would out score the Vipers 33-17 in the quarter, with Richardson and Cousins combining for 16 points in the frame. The Bighorns would shoot 56% from the field in the quarter compared to the Vipers shooting 35%. The Bighorns would close the deficit to 10 (78-68) entering the final frame.

After a three from Vipers' Isaiah Taylor in the first 90 seconds, the Bighorns responded an 8-2 run spurred by a three from Richardson, making it a 91-82 game with 5:52 left in play. Richardson and Patterson would sink back-to-back threes within 50 seconds of each other making it an eight point game (93-101) with 2:23 left in the final quarter. The Vipers would never relinquish the lead, defeating the Bighorns 112-103. The Bighorns would win the final frame 35-34 with Richardson going 2-3 from behind the arc.

Richardson would score 19 of his 22 points in the second half.

The Bighorns will continue on the road traveling to Cedar Park, TX to face the Austin Spurs Tuesday, Nov. 15 at 9 a.m. PST.
