Grand Rapids Drive News Release
OSHKOSH - The Grand Rapids Drive (10-10) picked up their third win in a row on Wednesday night, getting back to .500 for the first time since Nov. 18 as they defeated the Wisconsin Herd (11-7) on the road by a 111-104 score. They held off a late challenge from the Herd after gaining control by outscoring Wisconsin 34-18 in the third quarter.
KJ McDaniels continued to excel in his third game for the Drive, contributing a couple highlight-reel dunks in addition to his team-high 24 points and seven rebounds, actually his lowest scoring total of the season thus far for Grand Rapids. Landry Nnoko's streak of double-digit rebounding games ended, but he still finished with 21 points and eight rebounds. Speedy Smith had the Drive's only double-double, putting up 10 points and 10 assists. Four other Drive players scored in double figures as well.
Xavier Munford continued to lead the charge on Wisconsin's side of things, finishing with 22 points and 10 rebounds. James Young chipped in 17 with six rebounds and Joel Bolomboy was the other Herd player aside from Munford with a double-double, scoring 11 points with 11 rebounds.
The Herd led 51-46 at halftime after a back-and-forth first two quarters that saw 10 lead changes and six ties, with neither team able to build a lead larger than eight points. But the one-sided third quarter forced the Herd into comeback mode, and while they cut the Drive's lead to within five with under three minutes to go, the visitors were able to shut the door.
Wisconsin outrebounded the Drive 51-40 and kept even with their efficiency both from three-point range and the field, but they drew 10 fewer free throw attempts than the Drive (27-17), turned the ball over 26 times to just 14 from Grand Rapids and made just two three-pointers in the first half on 14 attempts. In addition to turning the ball over just 14 times the Drive also had their highest assist total in a regulation game this season with 26.
The Drive's last game before Christmas will be at home against the Maine Red Claws on Friday. The Herd's will be in Westchester on Saturday as they take on the Knicks.
