SANTA CRUZ, Calif. - The NBA D-League Champion Santa Cruz Warriors (3-1) defeated the Reno Bighorns (1-3) 118-114 on Sunday night at the Reno Events Center, with five Warriors scoring in double-figures.
Santa Cruz's Elliot Williams notched a team-high 27 points, 9 rebounds, and 8 assists, as Darington Hobson recorded 25 points, 9 rebounds, and 6 assists. Daniel Orton posted 19 points, shooting 80% from the field, while Jarred Shaw added 17 points and 11 rebounds.
The Bighorns were paced by Erick Green who posted a game-high 40 points, 6 rebounds, and 6 assists. Vincent Hunter recorded a double-double for Reno, finishing with 21 points and 13 rebounds.
The opening frame saw Santa Cruz race ahead behind Daniel Orton's 10 early points, leading by as many as 9 points and dominating in the paint (14-4), while converting on second-chance opportunities (5-0).
The Warriors opened their lead to as many as 14 points in the second period before Reno went on a run to bring the Bighorns within 2 points. Reno would never eclipse Santa Cruz's lead in the first half, as the Warriors held the seven-point edge heading into the break.
The Warriors would push the lead to 19, before Reno went on a fourth quarter run that would put them within two points of the Warriors. The late rally was not enough to overcome the Warriors, as Santa Cruz edged the Bighorns by 4 points.
The Santa Cruz Warriors will travel to Bakersfield to take on the Jam on Tuesday at 7:00 p.m. PST. Fans can catch the game on the NBA D-League's YouTube channel, via www.santacruzbasketball.com.
