Kansas City Comets News Release

INDEPENDENCE, MO (March 12, 2015) - The Major Arena Soccer League announced the finalists for each of its major year-end awards today. The winners of the Most Valuable Player, Goalkeeper of the Year, Defender of the Year, Rookie of the Year and Coach of the Year awards will be announced at a press conference the week of the Ron Newman Cup Final.

A total of four Comets players are nominated to win individual awards. In addition, Head Coach Vlatko Andonovski could win the Coach of the Year recognition.

League leader Leo Gibson, who set records for goal (48), assists (45), points (93) and points in a game (12), will compete for the Most Valuable Player award along with San Diego Sockers' Kraig Chiles and Oxford City FC of Texas' Lucas Totti.

Longtime Comets goalkeeper Danny Waltman set a record for most wins in a season with 17. However, it will be a close decision since he is up against Baltimore's William Vanzela who recorded four shutouts and San Diego's Chris Toth who had a 4.58 GAA.

Defenders John Sosa and Brian Harris were named to the All-League First Team earlier this week. Both Comets players will be competing for the Defender of the Year Award along with Baltimore's Pat Healey, who recorded a league-high 53 blocked shots.

Last but not least, the Coach of the Year award will be disputed between head coaches Bernie Lilavois (Ontario Fury), Giuliano Oliviero (Milwaukee Wave) and Vlatko Andonovski (Comets).

Andonovski led the Comets to their first ever MISL Championship last year a couple of months before winning the National Women's Soccer League title with FC Kansas City. This season, he guided his team to a perfect 20-0 season.

The Comets will host the Milwaukee Wave tonight at the Independence Events Center for the Central Divisional Championship. For more information on tickets, call 855.4KC.GOAL.
