Santa Cruz Warriors News Release

SANTA CRUZ, Cailif. - The Santa Cruz Warriors and Santa Cruz City Schools today unveiled a basketball math curriculum to be taught in all Santa Cruz City elementary and middle schools. With the success of the 'Read to Achieve' program, the Warriors and Santa Cruz Schools curriculum leadership developed a complementary educational program focused on grade-level appropriate math with basketball as the focus.

"We are proud to unveil 'Math Warriors,' an educational program that will couple basketball and math in the classroom for the first time ever in our schools," said Santa Cruz Warriors President, Jim Weyermann. "4,000 Santa Cruz students will have the unique experience of seeing first-hand how math factors into professional sports, and continue to build on their connection with the Warriors and the community."

The students were introduced to the origin, history, and the basic fundamentals of basketball and participated in several different in-class activities over the last two weeks. Today and tomorrow, the Warriors are bussing all 4,000 students to the 11th annual NBA D-League Showcase at Kaiser Permanente Arena, to experience a game and apply the math curriculum, developed from NBA D-League statistics.

"Because of the Warriors' generosity, the students have become really passionate about the Santa Cruz Warriors basketball team and the subject of math," said Jennifer Wildman, Director of Curriculum and Assessment. "This educational opportunity is unlike anything our schools have seen, and has given our students a fresh and positive re-introduction to math."

Participating schools include: Westlake Elementary School, Gault Elementary School, Bay View Elementary School, Branciforte Middle School, Delaveaga Elementary School, Mission Hill Middle School, and Branciforte Small Schools.
