Stamps Play in Ottawa for First Time Since 2005

August 22, 2014 - Canadian Football League (CFL)
Calgary Stampeders News Release

The Calgary Stampeders play their first game in the Nation's Capital since 2005 as they take on the Ottawa RedBlacks at TD Place Stadium on Sunday afternoon. Kickoff is at 1 p.m. MDT and the game will be broadcast on News Talk 770 and TSN.

The Stamps go into the contest with a league-best 6-1 record including a 38-17 win over the RedBlacks at McMahon Stadium in Week 7. Calgary followed that result up with a 30-20 decision in Hamilton last week to improve their road record to 3-0.

Ottawa (1-6) is attempting to snap a four-game losing streak. The most recent setback for the RedBlacks was a heart-breaking 10-8 decision on home turf to the Edmonton Eskimos.

The Stampeders are hoping to have running back Jon Cornish back in the lineup for Sunday's contest. The league's reigning Most Outstanding Player has been sidelined since Week 1 with a concussion.

Even without Cornish for the past six games, Calgary leads the CFL in both scoring (27.3 points per game) and defence (a league-low average of 16.3 points allowed per contest).

The game features an intriguing battle at quarterback as 24-year-old Stamps pivot Bo Levi Mitchell, in his first season as a starter, faces 15-year CFL veteran and former Stamp Henry Burris.

Mitchell has thrown for 1,692 yards and 12 touchdowns this season and leads the CFL with a 102.6 QB rating. Burris has 1,634 passing yards so far in 2014 and needs just 96 yards to pass Danny McManus for third place on the CFL's all-time list.

The Stamps haven't played in Ottawa since July 16, 2005, when they suffered a 33-18 loss to the Renegades at what was then known as Frank Clair Stadium. Calgary's most recent win in the Nation's Capital came on Sept. 22, 2002, when Marcus Crandell hooked up with Kamau Peterson for a 35-yard touchdown in overtime as the Stamps won 26-22.
