Syracuse Mets News Release

The Syracuse Chiefs, the Triple-A affiliate of the Washington Nationals, scorched the Lehigh Valley IronPigs, 13-0, on Thursday night from Coca-Cola Park in Allentown, Pennsylvania. The Chiefs struck early and often with nine of their runs coming throughout the first four innings.

Syracuse (58-39) got on the board in the first inning off Lehigh Valley right-hander Barry Enright. With two outs, Zach Walters singled. Tyler Moore followed with a base hit to left field to advance Walters to third. After Brandon Laird walked, the bases were loaded for Destin Hood. Hood delivered with a two-out, two-RBI double to left field for a 2-0 Syracuse lead.

The Chiefs extended their lead in the third inning with one potent swing of the bat. Walters led the inning off with a single to right field. Moore then dropped a base hit into center field to put runners on first and second for Laird. The third baseman soared a 1-0 pitch from Enright over the left-field fence for a three-run home run, and the Chiefs took a five-run lead.

Syracuse continued the onslaught in the fourth inning. Emmanuel Burriss led the inning off with a triple off the right-center field wall. Burriss scored on a Jeff Kobernus double to left field to give the Chiefs a 6-0 advantage. After a Walters fly out, Phillippe Aumont relived Enright. Moore immediately singled off Aumont to score Kobernus for a seven-run Syracuse lead. Laird then knocked in his fourth run of the game with a triple to right-center to score Moore and extend the Chiefs lead to eight. Syracuse's ninth run scored when Aumont threw a wild pitch to Hood that hit the backstop, allowed Laird to score, and cement a 9-0 Chiefs lead.

The Chiefs concluded their scoring barrage in the eighth inning off relievers Tyler Knigge and Jeremy Horst. Kobernus led off with a single and moved to third on a Walters single to right field. Moore then singled to score Kobernus to make the Syracuse lead 10 runs. Laird followed with a base hit to score Walters for an 11-run advantage. A Hood double scored Moore and moved Laird to third to push the lead to 12 runs, still with no outs. Horst then replaced Knigge on the mound. After a Sandy Leon pop out, Josh Johnson picked up an RBI with a sacrifice fly to center field to score Laird for a 13-0 Chiefs lead.

Syracuse starting pitcher Blake Treinen stifled Lehigh Valley (46-51). The right-hander threw six innings of four-hit ball while striking out six batters en route to his sixth win of the year. Treinen improved his record to a perfect 6-0, and Syracuse is 10-1 when Treinen takes the mound.

The Chiefs and IronPigs play Friday night in Allentown before heading to Syracuse to play four games in two days. Right-hander A.J. Cole takes the mound for Syracuse on Friday against Lehigh Valley right-hander Sean O'Sullivan. First pitch is set for 7:05.
