St. John's IceCaps News Release
The St. John's IceCaps launched the third annual Buddy's Book Club Presented by Statoil, today at Goulds Elementary School.
A means to promote reading during the summer months, Buddy's Book Club members are encouraged to read for 20 minutes a day during the school vacation period. By reading as little as 20 minutes per day, each child will accumulate 20 hours of reading during the summer.
"The St. John's IceCaps are pleased and proud to partner once again with Statoil to promote Buddy's Book Club," said team President and CEO Danny Williams.
"As we know, reading fosters academic achievement, communication and concentration skills, discipline and much more. Summer vacation provides a great opportunity to devote some extra time to appreciate the joy of reading. We were quite pleased that so many young people joined Buddy's club last summer and we hope for even greater participation this year."
Buddy's Book Club enables students and their parents to download a reading tracking sheet from the IceCaps website to follow their progress. Participants will be eligible for various prize packages from the hockey club.
As part of this summer's launch, Buddy the Puffin and IceCaps and Statoil representatives were on site to explain the program. Local members of the RCMP were also on hand as special guests to act as guest readers for the launch.
Once again, the support of Statoil is essential to the success of the program and they are proud to sponsor Buddy's Book Club for the third year in a row.
"Statoil is delighted to be a part of this wonderful program once again," says Gisle Stjern, Vice President Offshore Newfoundland, Statoil Canada. "Buddy's Book Club helps develop literacy skills and encourages youth to take a proactive and engaged stance towards education, which is important for the future of this province."
Participants can register through www.stjohnsicecaps.com and will be eligible for numerous prizes, to be announced at a later date.
