Omaha Storm Chasers April 19th Game Notes

April 19, 2014 - Pacific Coast League (PCL1)
Omaha Storm Chasers News Release

LAST NIGHT'S WIN: After falling behind 2-0 in the early innings, the Chasers hit homers in the fifth and sixth to power their way to a 3-2 win over the Round Rock Express, earning their first series win of the 2014 season. Omaha earned its 20th victory in 28 meetings with the Round Rock at Werner Park, the most against any team in the history of the stadium (Nashville is second at 19 wins). Matt Fields went 0-for-3 in the game, ending his career best hitting streak at 14 games.

BRINGING THE PENA: Francisco Pena's two-run homer in the fifth inning yesterday was his third consecutive start with a home run. Pena is the first player to pull off the feat since fellow catcher Brett Hayes (currently with the Royals) homered in four straight starts from August 21-25 vs New Orleans (Christian Colon also had three straight homer games for Omaha last year on July 24-26 vs Oklahoma City and Nashville). Pena is tied for the team lead in homers with Brett Eibner at three (Brett Hayes was the first catcher in Omaha history to lead the team in homers last year).

THIRD TIME'S A RECORD: The Storm Chasers and Sounds are facing off for already the third time this season, the first time in Omaha's PCL history they have played the same team three times in the opening month. Counting their April opponents this season, Nashville is the most frequent first month foe with 20 total series in the 17 years Omaha has been in the PCL (just edging out Albuquerque who Omaha has faced in 19 April series and Memphis at 16 April series).

ON THE OFFENSIVE: Omaha is tied with Tacoma for the best team average in the PCL at .314, but lead with a per game average of 10.7 hits. If continued would be tied for the second best hits per game average in a month for Omaha since becoming the Storm Chasers, with the best average for a month in April of 2012 when they averaged 11.4 hits. The top three teams in hits per game are all in the American Conference North (Oklahoma City second at 10.6 and Colorado Springs at 10.5).

EVERYBODY BUT BURGOS: The Storm Chasers have totaled 13 total runs off Nashville starters this season, with 8 of those runs coming in the two starts by Hiram Burgos (the only Sounds starter they have faced twice). Against the other five starters for Nashville, the Storm Chasers have managed just five total runs and have been held to one run or less in four games.

NO MULTIPLE GAME WINNERS: Omaha is one of four PCL teams without a multiple game winner (other three teams are all in last place in their divisions: Fresno, New Orleans Salt Lake).

JOHNNY DOUBLES: Johnny Giavotella ranks 10th on the Omaha all-time career doubles list at 83 and is one double away from tying Irving Falu (2004, 2009-13) and Dave Cripe (1976- 79) for 8th place all-time at 84 doubles. If Giavotella totals 26 doubles this season, he would move all the way up to 4th place all-time (Joe Vitiello, 1994-99, ranks 4th at 103 doubles).
