Calgary Stampeders News Release
The Calgary Stampeders are pleased to announce that a special new award will be presented for the first time at the fourth annual Fan Forum on Monday, Apr. 14 at the Red & White Club.
Honouring the memory of one the legendary figures in Stampeders history, the Herm Harrison Memorial Award will be presented annually to a Stampeders player who distinguishes himself in the field of community service. Harrison passed away on Nov. 2, 2013, at the age of 74.
"Herm Harrison was an integral part of the Stampeders family and the Calgary community for many decades and he is tremendously missed," said Stampeders president Gordon Norrie. "I can think of no better way to pay tribute to the man and his legacy than with this award, which serves as a reminder that the greatness of an athlete goes well beyond his accomplishments on the field."
One of the franchise's all-time greats, Harrison played for the Stampeders from 1964-72 and was a West Division all-star on six occasions and a CFL all-star three times. Harrison was a member of the Stamps' 1971 Grey Cup championship team and scored a touchdown in a 14-11 victory over the Toronto Argonauts.
A product of Arizona State University, Harrison settled in Calgary after his playing career and was an active member of numerous community activities as an alumnus. Among the many causes he supported, the Special Olympics were a particular favourite.
Harrison was added to the Stampeders Wall of Fame in 1988 and inducted into the Canadian Football Hall of Fame in 1993.
Members of the Harrison family will be on hand at Monday's event to present the inaugural edition of the Herm Harrison Memorial Award. The official Fan Forum program begins at 7 p.m. and the award presentation is scheduled to take place at approximately 7:35 p.m.
