MLS Eastern Conference Roundup
Published on June 17, 2013 under Major League Soccer (MLS) News Release
With only five Eastern Conference teams were in League action over the weekend, the Crew made a statement with its 2-0 victory over the conference-leading Montreal Impact. In a battle at the bottom of the table, Toronto FC picked up its first three-point performance since March after beating D.C. United at RFK Stadium.
Here is how the Eastern Conference table looks after the 16th week of the 2013 MLS Regular Season so far.
1. Montreal Impact - 26 pts. - Week 16: 2-0 Loss at Columbus Crew
Following a two-week break, the first-place Impact came out flat in the absence of Head Coach Marco Schällibaum and veteran defender Alessandro Nesta to lose on the road in Columbus. Montreal faces a quick turnaround this week, hosting the Houston Dynamo on Wednesday.
2. New York Red Bulls - 25 pts. - Week 16: Idle
The Red Bulls were idle in MLS for the second-straight week. New York returns to action on the road against the Philadelphia Union on Sunday.
3. Philadelphia Union - 22 pts. - Week 16: Idle
After a week off, the Union hosts the New York Red Bulls on Sunday at PPL Park.
4. Houston Dynamo - 22 pts. - Week 16: Idle
Following a break from MLS play, the Dynamo will end a stretch of three-straight road matches in MLS with a midweek tilt in Montreal on Wednesday.
5. Sporting Kansas City - 22 pts. - Week 16: Idle
Sporting Kansas City will look to rebound from its U.S. Open Cup loss to Orlando City SC last week as it travels to FC Dallas on Saturday. Sporting could welcome back key contributors Graham Zusi and Matt Besler from U.S. National Team duty in Dallas.
6. New England Revolution - 20 pts. - Week 16: 4-3 Loss at Vancouver Whitecaps FC
With a 2-0 lead, the League's best defense crumbled to concede four goals following Andrew Farrell's 23rd minute red card against Vancouver Whitecaps FC. Following a Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup clash with D.C. United on June 26, the Revs return to MLS play on June 29 against Chivas USA at the Stub Hub Center.
7. Columbus Crew - 20 pts. - Week 16: 2-0 Win vs. Montreal Impact
Needing to make a statement, the Crew rose to the occasion to defeat the first-place Impact in Columbus. First-half goals from MatÃas Sánchez and Dominic Oduro paved the way for the team's fourth shutout of the season. Now the Crew will look to win consecutive matches for the first time in 2013 as it hosts the Chicago Fire on Saturday.
8. Chicago Fire - 12 pts. - Week 16: Idle
The Fire was idle in Week 16 as it looks to extend its three-match unbeaten streak visiting to Crew Stadium on Saturday.
9. Toronto FC - 11 pts. - Week 16: 2-1 Win at D.C. United
The Reds picked up their first win since March 9 as Toronto FC took down D.C. United at RFK Stadium. Toronto travels to Houston on June 22 in Week 17.
10. D.C. United - 6 pts. - Week 16: Loss vs. D.C. United
United's winless streak was extended to 13 matches after Saturday's home loss to Toronto FC. D.C hosts the San Jose Earthquakes in Week 17 at RFK Stadium.
