Whalers to Host Draft Party

May 23, 2013 - Federal Hockey League (FHL) Danbury Whalers

The Federal Hockey League is proud to announce that on Thursday, June 20th at 7:30 PM the league will be holding its Inaugural College / Junior Hockey Draft. Each member club will be holding their own draft day event in their city with team's reporting picks via phone call to the league office.

Fans can also follow the team's draft picks on their official facebook page.

The draft is slated for 4 rounds.

Players eligible for the draft include all collegiate & junior players who have completed their eligibility.

Teams drafting a player will retain that player's signing rights regardless of whether that player signs with the franchise.

It is believed that the Federal Hockey League is first minor league professional hockey league to conduct a rookie draft for players.

Vice Commissioner Andrew "Sarge" Richards commented, "We have seen how our league has developed players and created interest in the hockey world. We feel that by launching this draft we are going to further strengthen our franchises and create more hockey opportunities for players wishing to continue their careers."

FHL Director of Hockey Operations Phil DeFranco stated, "Teams are continually looking to upgrade their rosters. This draft will give our coaches the opportunity dig deeper to find players to put out the best product possible."

From Danbury Whalers Senior Partner, President, CFO Alan Friedman "We understand that this is a ground breaking announcement. We are not afraid to take chances, and we feel that when other leagues see this process develop and refined it will become a very useful tool to all levels of hockey beyond just in the NHL."

Nicole Kirnan, Owner and President of the 1000 Island Privateers commented "We have already circled a few players from both the collegiate and junior hockey ranks that we think would be great additions to our roster. We are trying to target the players who have a local connection to our region in both Division I and Junior level. Getting our fans excited about the Privateers seasonin the summer is a good thing.

In the coming weeks, franchises will be announcing where their draft central fan party will be. We invite all Federal Hockey League fans to attend these teams summer event and look forward to the start of our 4th season.
