Schlosser, M-Braves Silence Stars

Looking for their first series win in over a month, the Huntsville Stars fell short in game four of a five-game series against the Mississippi Braves, losing by a score of 5-1 at Trustmark Park on Wednesday night.

For the second start in a row, M-Braves starting pitcher Gus Schlosser stifled the Stars bats. Two weeks after giving up one run on four hits over six innings at Joe Davis Stadium to earn a win, the 24-year-old posted the same exact line on Wednesday night to improve to 5-1 on the season. The Sarasota, Florida native has now won his last four consecutive starts.

The M-Braves gave Schlosser all the run support he needed in the second inning, scoring two unearned runs off of Stars starting pitcher Andy Moye. With a runner on first and two outs, Stars shortstop Ozzie Chavez collided with left fielder Kentrail Davis on a pop-up from Mississippi outfielder Dan Brewer. Instead, the ball was dropped, and outfielder Jose Martinez scored from first to make the score 1-0. Two batters later, Schlosser helped out his own cause with an RBI single to score Brewer and put Mississippi up by two.

In the fourth inning, a solo homer from Martinez and a two-run double from M-Braves second basemen Phil Gosselin made the score 4-0 and effectively ended the outing for Moye. The 25-year-old righty fell to 1-5 on the year after giving up five runs (one earned) on three hits in four innings. Moye has now lost his last four starts.

On offense, the Stars scored their only run in the fifth inning. The frame started when a double from outfielder Rene Tosoni and a single from third basemen Mike Walker put runners on the corners with one out. One batter later, a RBI groundout from catcher Robinzon Diaz scored Tosoni to put the Huntsville on the board.

Diaz also added a RBI single in the ninth inning off of M-Braves lefty Ian Thomas to give the Stars their only other run of the game.

The M-Braves scored their last insurance run in the seventh inning as third basemen Edward Salcedo hit a solo homer off of Huntsville reliever Brian Garman. The solo homers from Martinez and Salcedo for Mississippi gave the M-Braves their first multi-homer game at home as a team since July 15th, 2012.

With the Stars and M-Braves each having two wins apiece in this series, Huntsville will play their third straight series-deciding game to end a five-game set on Thursday.

The Stars will look to take the series by sending RHP Arcenio Leon (0-3, 7.71 ERA) to the bump. He will face off against M-Braves RHP Aaron Northcraft (1-2, 4.11 ERA). First pitch is at 7:00 PM.
