FC Edmonton News Release
Edmonton AB (April 28, 2013) - In a typical spring day in Edmonton, the San Antonio Scorpions travelled north to take on FC Edmonton in the Eddies first league home game of 2013.
It took a while for both teams to get used to the surroundings and each other - but Edmonton had the first real chance off a free kick in the 8th minute. Midfielder Neil Hlavaty sends the ball in that Scorpions 'keeper Pat Hannigan was unable to get a glove on it. All that FCE defender Carlyle Mitchell had to do was touch it in, but the ball goes just wide of the net.
It was the Scorpions with the next big chance in the 24th minute. A streaking attack from defender Luka Vucko makes the run up from the back four and sends in a dangerous ball that leaves Eddies goalkeeper Lance Parker stranded at the far post. Unfortunately for the visiting team, there was no one there to touch it into the back of the net.
The break-through goal didn't come until the injury time when FCE defender Eddie Edward made the run off a deflected San Antonio corner and ends up being brought down in the box. Saiko steps up to take the PK and sends Hannigan the wrong way for the Eddies to take the lead 1-0.
Coming back from the restart, the Scorpions were ready to get back into the game. In the 64th minute Parker came off his line and out of the box to clear a ball, but was left in no-mans land. The Eddie backline were able to cover for wayward 'keeper and keep themselves in the lead.
The Eddies made a few replacements in the second half bringing on Massimo Mirabelli and Michael Nonni - making his first appearance with the team.
The Scorpions thought they had a drawing goal in the 83rd minute, but the goal was called offside. A few moments later, Parker come out to make a big save to once again keep the Eddies in the match. It in the 88th minute when Scorpion's forward Esteban Bayona ended up one-on-one with Parker, and once again Parker came up with a big save to keep the Eddies ahead.
As injury time approached, the Scorpions continued to search for that game-drawing goal, but the FC Edmonton backline continued to stand strong. Tempers ran a little higher in the dying minutes, but the Eddies were able to hold on to their 1-0 lead and earn their first league win of the 2013 NASL season.
The Eddies now play in the second leg of the Amway Canadian Championship against Vancouver Whitecaps FC on Wednesday May 1 in Vancouver. Their next league game takes place against the Tampa Bay Rowdies on Saturday May 4.
