Ice Flyers Victorious over 'Hawks

January 4, 2013 - SPHL (SPHL) - Augusta RiverHawks News Release

Augusta-GA--The two teams traded great scoring chances throughout the first period of play, but it was the Ice Flyers getting on the board first. Defenseman Jeremy Gates sent a slap-pass into the slot onto the stick of Ron Cramer. Cramer made no mistake, quickly sliding the puck along the ice between RiverHawks' goaltender Austin Lee's legs for the games' first goal.

The RiverHawks thought they had tied the game early in the second period on the power play. Ian Watters batted at a loose puck in-front of Ice Flyers goaltender Gerry Festa. The puck squirted by the goaltender and and Watters pounced on the opportunity and put it in the back of the net. However, simultaneously the Referee apparently lost sight of the puck and blew the puck dead as it crossed the goal-line, negating the goal for the RiverHawks.

It took nearly the rest of the period, but the RiverHawks were finally able to break through. In the final minute of play of the second period, Captain Matt Auffrey controlled the puck in the Ice Flyers' zone. He was converged upon by two Ice Flyers players, but managed to get the puck to linemate Patrick Schafer. Schafer made a beautiful no-look pass to Will Lacasse at the point, and he walked into the slot and fired it past Festa to tie the game.

The RiverHawks appeared to have a glorious chance to take their first lead of the game when they were awarded a power play near the start of the third period, but the tables were turned on them by the Ice Flyers' penalty killing unit. Cramer got his second goal of the game as he tipped a pass from a teammate up over Austin Lee's shoulder to regain the one-goal lead.

The Ice Flyers took control of the game later in the period capitalizing on a 5-on-3 power play. They worked the puck around to perfection, and it eventually ended up on the stick of veteran Leo Thomas. He made no mistake firing past Lee to make it a two-goal game. The Ice Flyers finished the scoring with just over a minute left scoring into the empty net.

The 'Hawks will be back in action tomorrow night as their in-state rival, the Columbus Cottonmouths, travel to Augusta. It's Star Wars Night with the puck drop scheduled for 7:35PM.
