Roster Starting to Take Shape at FCE

Edmonton, Ab. (December 4, 2012) - Following last week's announcement of Lance Laing and Neil Hlavaty joining the club, the Eddies have exercised options on a number of players while releasing others, not to mention another new signing in Canadian defender Giovanni Edson (Eddie) Edward.

A native of Ottawa, Ontario, Edward started his career with the Fury in 2007. His first big break came with MLS side FC Dallas in March 2010. The defender made only one appearance however because of a knee injury.

Edward joined the NASL's Puerto Rico Islanders in April 2012 and made 20 appearances for the club, including three games against FC Edmonton.

"It's been a while since I've been a part of a Canadian club but I'm extremely excited for the opportunity FC Edmonton has given me for this upcoming season," Edward said. "Just from playing against them last year, I saw the potential that the club has and I hope that I can play a strong part in helping the team have a successful season."

Meanwhile, technical director Joe Petrone and the club exercised the options on 11 players: Lance Parker (GK), David Proctor (D), Shaun Saiko (M), Michael Cox (F), Kenny Caceros (M), Elvir Gigolaj (F), Paul Hamilton (D), Chris Kooy (M), David Monsalve (GK), John Smits (GK) and Antonio Rago (D), will all rejoin the team when training camp begins in mid-February.

Neil Hlavaty (M), Lance Laing (D) and Eddie Edward (D), all newly-signed, will be at training camp as well.

Petrone had to release players who ended the season with the Eddies as well. Adam West (D), Paul Craig (F) and Dominic Oppong (M) have all been released and are free to join new clubs while Yashir Pinto's loan was not extended.

Technical staff will continue to scout players throughout the off-season and no contracts are guaranteed.
