Surge Win Exhibition Opener

The Missisippi Surge had a quick start in its first exhibiton game and held on to defeat the Louisiana IceGators 4-2 Thursday night in Louisiana.

Kyle Kudroch had two goals and Trent Bonnett also scored for Mississippi in the first 16:07 of the game. Richard VanderHoek had two assists for the Surge in the first period.

Louisiana got on the board when Denny Kearney scored 1:18 into the second period. Kevin Undershute regained the three-goal lead for the Surge at 16:03 of the period. The period got fiesty, featuring two fights, just 40 seconds apart in the 14th minute. Those were the only penalties of the period, however.

Robert Short cut the lead to two midway through the third period. But Louisiana could get no closer as Mike Wuthrich stopped 36 of the 38 shots he faced in goal for the Surge. At the other end of the ice, the Surge got its four goals on 21 shots against B.J. O'Brien.

On Friday, the Surge will head to Pensacola for an afternoon scrimmage with the Ice Flyers.

The Surge will begin its fourth season of play in the SPHL on Saturday October 27th at home against the Pensacola Ice Flyers. Once again, this season, the Surge will have 28 home games at the Mississippi Coast Coliseum.
