Stone Crabs win over Fort Myers

Charlotte Stone Crabs News Release

FORT MYERS -- The Charlotte Stone Crabs worked from the same script that brought them success a night earlier, leaning on great pitching and timely offense to take a 4-1 victory over the Fort Myers Miracle.

Eliazer Suero (5-7) allowed just one run on two hits over seven innings of work to lay the foundation for the Game 3 victory. His strong start was backed up by the necessary run support as Charlotte overcame a 1-0 deficit by scoring the final four runs of the game.

The Miracle plated the initial run in the bottom of the third inning. Angel Morales tripled off the top of the right field wall to lead things off. Suero was resilient, picking up consecutive strikeouts of Andy Leer and Jhon Goncalves. Needing just one more out to strand the runner, Suero was unable reach Daniel Santana's chopper to the right of the mound which went as an infield hit to score Morales.

On that play ball was picked up by Robi Estrada, who threw late to first base and injured his right leg and was forced to leave the game. Lacking position player depth on the next to last day of the season, Charlotte manager Jim Morrison had to get creative to cover all the position. Left fielder Steve Tinoco moved in to play second base, while catcher David Wendt borrowed Tinoco's glove and assumed the role in left. Both men played errorless ball over the final six innings of the game.

The Stone Crabs got their scoring started in the top of the fourth, facing Miracle reliever Ryan O'Rourke (0-1). Todd Glaesmann's infield single to second was compounded by a throwing error by Levi Michael which moved Glaesmann to second base. Glaesman advanced to third base on Tinoco's ground out to second. Phil Wunderlich followed with a sharp grounder to first, but Steve Liddle opted to throw home immediately, allowing Wunderlich to reach on a fielder's choice when Glaesmann retreated to third. One out later, Wunderlich stole second base as a passed ball by Kyle Knudson allowed Glaesmann to score the game-tying run.

Charlotte took the lead on a somewhat low key play in the fifth inning. Wendt drew a lead-off walk and advanced to third on Glaesmann's single to right center. Tinoco then grounded into double play that scored Wendt and made it a 2-1 game.

Late insurance runs were provided by Luke Bailey's seventh home run of the seven, a solo shot in the seventh inning off Fort Myers reliever Ricky Bowen. An RBI-single from Cody Rogers in the top of the ninth rounded out the scoring.

Chris Andujar worked the final two innings to record his first save of the season.

The Stone Crabs will conclude the 2012 season as the wrap up the four-game series against Fort Myers on Sunday at Charlotte Sports Park. Right-hander George Jensen will make the start for Charlotte against lefty Pat Dean of Fort Myers. First pitch is scheduled for 5:30 p.m.
