Huntsville Stars News Release
HUNTSVILLE, Ala. - A night after being shutout, the Huntsville Stars fell to the Birmingham Barons by a score of 9-5 on Monday night.
In the bottom half of the first inning, second baseman Scooter Gennett crushed a solo home run off Barons starter Jacob Petricka to give Huntsville a 1-0 lead.
From that point on, it was all Birmingham. With a run in the second inning, two runs in the third inning and three runs in the fourth inning off of Stars starting pitcher Evan Anundsen, the Barons took a dominating 6-1 lead.
For the Stars, their best chance of a comeback came in the bottom half of the fourth inning. With two outs, a single by left fielder Brock Kjeldgaard and a walk from right fielder Kentrail Davis put runners on first and second for center fielder Josh Prince. He launched a moonshot over the left field wall, bringing Kjeldgaard and Davis home to cut the Stars deficit to two.
Unfortunately for the Stars, that was as close as they would get. Birmingham scored two runs off of Stars reliever Tim Dillard to pad their lead to 8-4. Following Petricka's exit before the seventh inning, Barons relievers Salvador Sanchez and Leroy Hunt shut down the Stars offense for the final three innings.
With the loss, Anundsen fell to 5-8 on the year. The 24-year-old righty gave up six runs (five earned) on nine hits through 3.1 innings. Aside from Anundsen, Josh Butler pitched one inning, giving up the final run on three hits. Lefty Brian Garman pitched 1.2 innings of scoreless relief while reliever Philippe Valiquette threw an inning of scoreless baseball to close out the game.
The Stars will finish off their five-game series with the Birmingham Barons and wrap up their 2012 regular home schedule on Tuesday. First pitch is at 6:43 PM.
