Kelowna Falcons News Release
Kelowna, BC: The Kelowna Falcons finished off the home portion of their 2012 regular season schedule with a 9-3 loss to the Wenatchee Applesox on Wednesday night.
With Tyler Hoelzen on the mound, the Falcons scored first for the first time this series, as Kyle Moses came home on an RBI sac fly from Preston Gray in the first inning.
In the second, Tucker Alexander scored on a wild pitch to make the score 2-0 Falcons after two.
However in the top of the third, the Applesox would respond with three runs on four hits, taking the lead for good. Ryan Drobny and Joey Jansen would collect RBI singles, with Ryan Howell scoring on a wild pitch.
The visitors from Wenatchee would add two more in the sixth on a two run single by Jeff Stephens. They would follow that up with four runs in the seventh with two outs off reliever Hunter Wood. In the inning Mitchell Gunsolus would connect for an RBI single. His hit would set a new West Coast League record for hits in a single season with 67. Two batters later Taylor Sparks would bring in two runs with a double.
The Falcons would get one run back in the bottom of the ninth as Reed Lavallee smacked a lead-off double, and would eventually score on a wild pitch.
Despite the loss the Falcons remain 3.5 games back of the final playoff spot as Bellingham also lost.
The Falcons (26-23) will now head to Walla Walla for a four game series with the Sweets (20-26) on Thursday, before finishing the season in Cowlitz on Monday night in a make-up game.
The Falcons are in a must win situation when travelling to Walla Walla and will need some help to have any chance of making the playoffs. Bellingham will begin a four game series in Wenatchee on Thursday.
If the Falcons should make the playoffs, they would host game one of the best of three East Division final on Friday August 10.
