PORT CHARLOTTE -- The Tampa Yankees went ahead to stay with four runs late as the Stone Crabs dropped the opener of a four-game series by a 6-2 final score on Monday night at Charlotte Sports Park.

The Stone Crabs hung tight with the Yankees through the first six innings, but Tampa rallied for a pair of runs in the seventh and two more in the eighth off Charlotte reliever Jimmy Patterson (7-4).

The Yankees benefitted from four walks in the early going, on their way to grabbing a 2-0 lead.

With two on and two out in the third, Kyle Roller delivered the first hit of the ball game for Tampa to plate a pair of runs off Charlotte starter Enny Romero.

The Stone Crabs responded in the home half. With one out Kevin Kiermaier tripled to right-center. Robi Estrada followed with an infield single to push across Kiermaier and cut the lead in half.

Todd Glaesmann picked up his fourth extra base hit in his sixth game since joining the Stone Crabs, driving a triple to left-center in the fourth. After Robby Price grounded back to the mound for the second out, Riccio Torrez delivered with a hard grounder off the glove of a diving Jose Mojica at short to tie the game, 2-2.

Romero did not factor in the decision as he lasted just four innings, permitting two runs on two hits while walking four.

Patterson retired the first six hitters he faced in order before Mojica reached on an error by Charlotte first baseman Steve Tinoco to open the seventh. Patterson came one out away from escaping the inning unscathed, but Adonis Garcia's double put the Yankees ahead to stay. Slade Heathcott tripled home Garcia to put the Yankees out to a 4-2 lead.

Tampa added two more in the eighth off Patterson, who was charged with four runs - two earned - in taking the loss.

Jose Ramirez (5-5) kept the Stone Crabs at bay through six strong innings, surrendering two runs on seven hits. He walked just one and struck out five.

The series will continue on Tuesday night at Charlotte Sports Park as the Stone Crabs will send Victor Mateo (5-3) to the hill. The Yankees will counter with Shane Greene (4-2). First pitch is set for 6:30 p.m.
