Huntsville Stars News Release
PENSACOLA, Fla. - To open up their inaugural series against the Pensacola BlueWahoos, starting pitcher Hiram Burgos tossed his first complete game of his career to lead the Huntsville Stars to a 6-1 victory on Tuesday night at the new Pensacola Bayfront Stadium.
The only blemish on Burgos's evening was early in the game. After retiring the first two batters he faced, a solo home run by BlueWahoos outfielder Ryan LaMarre gave Pensacola a 1-0 lead.
Following that homer, Burgos shutout the BlueWahoos through his final eight innings of work. The 24-year-old gave up eight hits while striking out six and only walking one to improve to 6-1 on the season.
Fortunately for Burgos, his phenomenal outing did not go to waste. After BlueWahoos starting pitcher Tony Cingrani sent down the Huntsville offense in order through three innings, the Stars offense was able to get to him their second time around in the order.
In the fourth inning, a two-out double by second baseman Scooter Gennett broke Cingrani's perfect game and no-hit bid. The next at-bat, a two-run home run by left fielder Khris Davis gave the Stars a 2-1 lead. That blast ended Cingrani's 27.2-inning streak in which he had not allowed an earned run.
In the next inning, outfielder Kentrail Davis doubled to right field to get the Stars in scoring position again. After catcher Anderson De La Rosa drew a walk, the Stars got a two-out, two-run triple by center fielder Josh Prince to go up 4-1. The icing on the cake was a two-run home run by first baseman Hunter Morris to give the Stars their 6-1 lead.
On offense, the Stars were lead by Khris Davis, who recorded his fourth straight multi-hit game with a 2-for-4 night at this dish. His fourth inning two-run blast was also his second homer in as many games. Aside from Davis, right fielder Kentrail Davis also went 2-for-4 at the plate with a double.
For Huntsville, the complete game by Burgos was the third for a Stars starting pitcher this season. The win was also their third in a row. Overall, the Stars have won four out of their last five games.
Game two of a five-game series will take place on Wednesday as the Stars will send RHP Johnnie Lowe (0-1, 9.49 ERA) to the mound. First pitch is at 7:05 p.m.
