Pump Jacks Surge in National Rankings
June 28, 2012 - Texas Collegiate League (TCL) East Texas PumpJacks
At 18-4 on the season and in first place in the Texas Collegiate League, the East Texas Pump Jacks have received many early accolades for their play, including the last two TCL Players of the Week in Kirby Pellant and Tyler Sullivan. The honors continue to roll in for the Jacks in 2012, as they leaped up 15 slots in the Perfect Game national collegiate summer league rankings to #12 in the nation out of more than 250 teams this week. East Texas was ranked #27 in last week's rankings, the first of the summer.
Perfect Game is an Iowa-based organization that is considered the country's top resource in baseball player recruiting, particularly at the high school and college ages. In addition to the national summer collegiate poll, Perfect Game conducts player showcases throughout the country.
The Pump Jacks were also ranked last summer, climbing all the way up to #8 in the nation before concluding the season at #22 in their record-setting 2011 TCL season.
In the season's second rankings, the #1 team as selected by Perfect Game remains the Harwich Mariners from the Cape Cod League, which for the second straight week places the most teams in the Top-30 with five. Ranking second in the poll are the Orleans Firebirds, also from the Cape Cod League. They are followed by the La Crosse Loggers from the Northwoods League in third place. The Wenatchee Applesox of the West Coast League are ranked fourth, and the San Luis Obispo Blues of the California Collegiate League round out the top five.
Only one other TCL team, the Brazos Valley Bombers, received consideration for the poll. They opened ahead of the Pump Jacks at #21 last week, but have since fallen out of the top-30 teams.
East Texas welcomes the Woodlands Strykers tonight for another installment of the popular Thirsty Thursdays. Fans can beat the heat with 50-cent soft drinks, one dollar draft beers and frozen margaritas for just three dollars.
First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 p.m.
