Flash Break Chicago's Undefeated Streak

June 13, 2012 - Women's Professional Soccer (WPS) Western New York Flash

Buffalo, NY-(June 13, 2012) The Western New York Flash of the Women's Premier Soccer League Elite (WPSL) defeated the Chicago Red Stars, breaking Chicago's undefeated record at Sahlen Stadium, Wednesday night.

The game started off slow, with the WNY Flash taking time to feel out the undefeated Red Stars. In the 30th minute, Jamaican international Omolyn Davis sent a cross into the box, getting the ball past Chicago's keeper, Jamie Forbes. Katy Frierson of the Flash had the follow up and put the ball in the back of the net, marking only the second goal scored on Chicago.

Davis continued to take on defenders and cross balls into the box in the second half. WNY Flash Captain McCall Zerboni took a corner kick in the 70th minute which found the head of Spanish international, Adriana, who scored her fifth goal of the season.

A good combination of passes starting with Frierson ended with a goal by Davis, who didn't know she even scored at first. Frierson flicked a ball wide to defender, Alex Sahlen, who had made a forward run. Sahlen crossed the ball and Davis volleyed it in. The ball bounced back out and Davis continued to try and head it in, not knowing that the ball had crossed the line on her first shot. Davis fell to the pitch when the ref announced a goal, and Zerboni rushed to Davis to celebrate.

"At the time, I didn't know it was in," Davis said.

WNY Flash Coach Aaran Lines said he had a conversation with Davis earlier this week about how she needed to be more productive in the final third.

"She played fantastic," Lines said, "I'm happy for her."

The next game for the Flash takes place at Carroll Field, in Gambrills, MD, on Saturday, June 16, at 2 p.m. versus the ASA Chesapeake Charge.

The WNY Flash are now 3-2-1.
