Erie Takes Game One from Austin, 108-95

Erie, Pennsylvania, Thursday, April 12 - The Erie BayHawks were able to commandeer their first round series, downing the Austin Toros by a final score of 108-95 in game one. Erie, the fifth seed, was able to put together a solid team effort in their double-digit victory over Austin, the playoff's three seed. Seven of the nine BayHawks who saw action scored in double figures, led by D.J. Kennedy and New York Knicks assignment player Jerome Jordan, who both scored 19 points.

It was the Toros that were able to jump out to an early advantage, leading by seven points midway through the first quarter. Erie was able to fight back and took a 30-29 lead on a Keith McLeod jumper at the end of the frame. The BayHawks would not look back as they kept the lead for the remainder of the contest. In the second quarter, the BayHawks grew their lead to twelve points, thanks in part to Kyle Spain's 11 point outburst. At the intermission, Erie held a seven point advantage, 60-53.

Despite shooting only 36%, the Toros were able to cut the Erie lead down to three in the final two minutes of the third quarter behind Flip Murray's nine points. Two free throws from Kennedy boosted Erie's lead back to five entering the final twelve minutes. Erie started the fourth quarter on a 10-2 run and kept a double digit lead for the majority of quarter. Austin would cut the lead to seven but the BayHawks went on another 10-2 run to put the Toros away for good.

Kennedy finished the game with 19 points, 12 rebounds and six assists while Jordan tallied 19 points and six rebounds. Keith McLeod chipped in with 15 points, Joey Graham scored 14, Spain finished with 11 and Kyle Goldcamp and Tyrone Brazelton also pitched in with 10 points each. Austin was paced by Murray, who finished with a game high 24 points. Julian Wright (18), Carldell Johnson (14), Eric Dawson (12) and Luke Zeller (10) also tallied double-digit totals for the Toros. Erie was able to out muscle the Toros on the glass, grabbing 43 rebounds to Austin's 36. The BayHawks also shot 54% from the floor, compared to Austin's 39%.

The teams will travel to Austin to play the remainder of the series. Game two will be held on Sunday at 4:00 PM and if necessary, game three will be played on Monday at 8:30 PM.
