Montreal Impact Select M.A.C. Hermann Trophy Winner Andrew Wenger with First Overall Selection in 20

KANSAS CITY (Thursday, January 12, 2012) - Ahead of their inaugural MLS season, the Montreal Impact selected Duke University and Generation adidas defender Andrew Wenger with the first selection in the 2012 MLS SuperDraft presented by adidas, held Thursday at the Kansas City Convention Center.

Wenger became the first M.A.C. Hermann Trophy winner - given to the most outstanding college soccer player in the United States - to be selected No. 1 overall since Alecko Eskandarian in the 2002 SuperDraft. In his first two seasons at Duke, Wenger played center back and was named rookie of the year (2009) and defensive player of the year (2010) in the Atlantic Coast Conference. Last season, he switched to forward and led the conference with 17 goals and earned offensive player of the year honors from the ACC.

In all, eight Generation adidas players were taken the first round. Below is a list of Generation adidas players by overall selection number in the SuperDraft.

- 3rd overall: Kelyn Rowe (UCLA) - New England Revolution

- 6th overall: Sam Garza (UC Santa Barbara) - San Jose Earthquakes

- 8th overall: Andrew Jean-Baptiste (UConn) - Portland Timbers

- 13th overall: Chandler Hoffman (UCLA) - Philadelphia Union

- 16th overall: Dom Dwyer (U of South Florida) - Sporting Kansas City

- 17th overall: Enzo Martinez (UNC) - Real Salt Lake

- 22nd overall: Tyler Polak (Creighton University) - New England Revolution

The University of Louisville had three players selected in the first round to lead all schools: Nick DeLeon went to D.C. United at No. 7, Austin Berry joined the Chicago Fire at No. 9, and Colin Rolfe was selected by the Houston Dynamo with the 18th overall selection.

In all, six schools had multiple players selected in the first round: Louisville (3), UCLA (2), California-Santa Barbara (2), Connecticut (2), Creighton (2), North Carolina (2).

Twenty-three colleges and universities were represented in the 38 overall selections of 2012 MLS SuperDraft. Creighton and Louisville led with four players apiece, followed by the University of South Florida which contributed three.

The 2012 MLS SuperDraft marked the first time that no trades occurred during the first two rounds on draft day.

Players who join MLS as part of the Generation adidas program receive unprecedented opportunities to develop their game and hone their skills at the professional level in Major League Soccer. In addition to training and playing with one of Major League Soccer's 18 professional clubs, Generation adidas players receive educational grants to further their college education. Generation adidas players do not count against an MLS team's salary budget.
