Danbury Whalers Announce the Return of Mike Vallely
The Danbury Whalers are proud to announce that Action Sports Icon Mike Vallely has signed an agreement to return to the Danbury Whalers this season. Vallely a renowned skateboarding icon, movie actor (Hangover & Paul Blart: Mall Cop), and action sports personality, played in one game for the Danbury Whalers during last season.
The story of the Danbury Whalers and Mike Vallely is one that started in March of 2010 when then Federal Hockey League Vice President of Marketing, Rich Lisk, (current Trenton Titans CEO) introduced Mike V to the Whalers organization. The Whalers at the time were a new franchise and jumped at the chance to add a personality like Mike and his legion of fans to the team. Mike V, a veteran of many celebrity hockey games including the 2002 NHL All-Star Game (Los Angeles) and a former member of the Anaheim Ducks organization wanted to make the transition to a professional team game. It was a great fit for both parties, and soon after Mike became the first ever action sports star to cross over onto a professional sports team.
Unfortunately for Mike, the Whalers, and the fans, the promotion became short lived as Mike broke his arm on Opening Night during his first shift when he dropped the gloves with Brooklyn's Joe Pelle.
Later in the season Mike made a return trip to Danbury and was in the stands during the playoffs. Playing professional hockey was unfinished business and both parties felt there was something left on the table.
Mike V will be in town the week of January 9th and will play for the Whalers on the 13th & 14th.
Vallely commented, "I look forward to getting back to Danbury this season. The fans are absolutely incredible and they really got behind what we were trying to do."
Mike V is considered a legend in the skateboarding world and one of the original founders of street skating.
His popularity grew quickly as fans gravitated towards his aggressive and pioneering style, elevating him to a level of celebrity that transcended skating.
His mainstream appeal led to acting roles in the prominent major movie releases, "Paul Blart: Mall Cop" and "The Hangover." He has also appeared in the successful Tony Hawk Pro Skater skateboarding video game series, and has his own television show, DRIVE, on Fuel TV.
