MOBILE, Ala. - 2011 first-round draft pick Trevor Bauer was roughed up for the second straight time as he handed the Birmingham Barons seven runs on seven hits over three innings in a 7-1 BayBears' loss on Sunday afternoon at Hank Aaron Stadium in game four of the South Division Championship Series.
Bauer (0-1) allowed a run before the first out was even recorded. Tyler Kuhn singled to start the contest and scored on a double by Brandon Short. Short came home on a Jon Gilmore sacrifice fly to put the Barons (2-2) up by a pair in the first frame.
Bauer had more issues in the second as he walked two batters in between a single from Alden Carrithers. With the bags full and no outs, Short tripled to left-center field which unloaded the bases to put the visitors up by five. Short crossed the dish again on a sac fly from Christian Marrero to make it 6-0.
Charlie Shirek (1-0) benefitted from all the early offense. He tossed seven smooth innings while striking out six. His only blemish came in the third when the BayBears (2-2) tagged him for four singles including a run-scoring knock by Taylor Harbin to bring home Adam Eaton.
Birmingham tacked on their final run in the top of the third with Carrithers tripling home Jose Martinez. Clay Zavada and Bryan Woodall each tossed three scoreless frames out of the BayBears' bullpen. Leyson Septimo and Tyson Corley picked up an inning to finish off the BayBears and tie this series at two games apiece.
The BayBears and Barons will wrap up the South Division Championship Series on Monday night at 7:05 with the fifth and decisive game. Right-hander Charles Brewer (5-1) will start for the BayBears against southpaw Justin Edwards (4-8).
