The NASL season kicks off in just over a month and FC Edmonton is heading off to warmer climes for a two week training camp in Casa Grande, Arizona.
Over 20 players are travelling down from Edmonton on Sunday morning to spend two weeks training and playing the first competitive games since the 2010 exhibition season.
FC Edmonton will play matches against FC Dallas (March 7), University of New Mexico (March 10 and 12), FC Tucson (March 18) and AZ Sahuaros (March 19) before returning home.
¬ÅThe boys are looking forward to it, we ¬â¢re all fed up with kicking each other, it ¬â¢s time to kick somebody else, ¬Â said Assistant Coach Dave Randall. ¬ÅWe can ¬â¢t wait to get into some sun and see some green grass and have a proper opponent. ¬Â
FC Edmonton will be staying and training at the Casa Grande Performance Institute (CGPI). The CGPI is a state-of-the-art multi-disciplined facility whose scope of operations and activities stretch 365 days a year. The CGPI currently includes eight football and soccer fields, and a 59,000 square foot training facility that houses a weight-training exercise area, therapy centres, classrooms, locker rooms, meeting rooms, and laundry facilities that can accommodate up to four full-sized professional teams.
Furthermore, Casa Grande has partnered with Major League Soccer teams and US Soccer to house their player development programs at the site.
Before leaving, FC Edmonton signed three more players to the squad, bringing the total number to 18 signed so far.
Defender Paul Hamilton, midfielder Jerome Baker and midfielder Alex Semenets are the latest to sign for the club.
¬ÅWe ¬â¢ll have 23-26 players there and we ¬â¢re still evaluating the squad, it ¬â¢s not totally picked, ¬Â Randall said. ¬ÅThere will be new guys joining us in Arizona but hopefully by the end of this camp, the team will be picked. We ¬â¢ll have 26-27 players and then we ¬â¢ll build towards the first league game on April 9. ¬Â
