
Northwest Indiana Added To 2011 Expansion Teams

Indianapolis, IN. The American Basketball Association (ABA) today announced that it has added the NWI Magical Stars to its fast-growing list of expansion teams for the 2011 season. "I had an opportunity meet with Kenny Miller here in Indianapolis last week and was very impressed with both his business and basketball background," stated Joe Newman, ABA CEO. "He and his partner Derrick Smith have all of the skills necessary to have a great operation on and off the court. They are so ahead of the curve that they might even play some games as an ABA traveling teams this season. Having another Indiana team is great."
Kenny Miller is a former professional basketball player who played his college career at Loyola University, where he was First Team All-MCC, and won MCC Newcomer of the Year honors. In 1988, he was the NCAA Division 1 men's basketball rebounding leader. A product of Chicago south, he played at Morgan Park High School where he received special mention recognition as a McDonald All-American. Known as The Big Mil because he alwyas got that big rebound, in 2002 he received his dual citizenshp with Spain. He has played in the US, France, Italy, Turkey, Greece and holds several rebounding records in Spain. He has also played in Puerto Rico, Venezuela and Equador. He is not the CEO of Solidrock Exposure Inc.
Derrick Smith is an insurance consultant and also an assistant high school coach at Morgan Park HS in Chicago where he was born and now resides. Aftern graduating from Morgan Park, he received a basketball scholarship to South Suburban College. An injury stopped his "on court" participation, but he concentrated on education and earned his BS degree in Finance from Chicago State University. He has served as a financial analyst and accounting within the banking industry for over 18 years and is a member of the National Black Insurance Association and Midwest Auditors Association. Derrick has worked with youth basketball leagues in Chicago and Northern Indiana.

"Derrick and I know Ron Hicks of the Chicago Steam well, we are impressed with what he has done and are looking forward to competing with him and the other area teams. This should be fun."
