LONDON, ONTARIO- The Ottawa Senators rookies kicked off the 2010 NHL Rookie Tournament at the John Labatt Centre in a Saturday matinee.
Things got off to a rocky start. Just over two minutes into the game Sens forward David Dziurzynski took Pittsburgh's Alex Grant into the boards to the left of the Penguins net. Grant needed to be carried off the ice by stretcher. Dziurzynski would leave the game after being issued a five minute boarding major and a game misconduct.
The Sens however would go on to strike first. At 8:53 Bobby Butler poked the puck between the pads of Pens net minder Brad Thiessen to give Ottawa the lead. Mike Hoffman and Patrick Wiercioch each tallied assists on the goal.
With just over four minutes remaining in the period, the Pens answered as Zach Sill snuck one past Robin Lehner into the Senators' net. Ryan Schnell recorded an assist on the goal.
The Pens jumped to a commanding 4-1 lead over the Senators in the second period. Dustin Jeffrey and Kevin Veilleux each got on the board, while Sill added his second goal of the afternoon.
The Senators put forth an excellent effort in the third period to pull within one goal. Nearly midway through the period, Butler tallied his second goal of the game, assisted by Hoffman who earned his second helper.
Defensemen Erik Gryba found the net off a set up by Wiercioch to pull the Sens within one 4-3.
Jeffrey would seal the deal for the Penguins, burying his second of the game with just 16 seconds left on the clock to propel Pittsburgh to the 5-3 win.
Ottawa will look to bounce back as they face the Chicago Blackhawks Sunday afternoon at 2 p.m.
