Augusta RiverHawks News Release
The Augusta RiverHawks hosted 33 pro-hockey hopefuls this weekend at their 2010 Free Agent Evaluation Camp at the Augusta Ice Sports Center. After two days and four sessions of exciting, hard-hitting action on the ice, two players emerged from the pack to earn the chance to make the RiverHawks' inaugural roster in October. Head Coach Brad Ralph and General Manager Gilles Richard reached agreements with forward Mitchell Moffatt from Whitley, ON and defenseman Curtis Megginson from North Bay, ON immediately following the final scrimmage on Sunday.
The decisions were not easy for RiverHawks personnel, as the two squads demonstrated a very high level of talent and competitiveness. The two players were selected based on consistent quality play throughout the weekend.
The 6-foot-2, 210-pound Moffatt was clearly the most skilled forward in the camp.
"Mitch really impressed us with his ability to create offense in both open ice and in traffic," said Ralph. "He didn't need a lot of time to make things happen with the puck, a quality that is absolutely necessary in the pros. He was extremely aggressive on the puck and did not shy away from physical play. He showed all the necessary tools and attitude to be successful in our league."
The 21-year-old Megginson impressed Richard with his composure and poise with the puck in pressure situations.
"Curtis had absolutely no panic in his game, something pretty remarkable for someone as young as he is with no pro experience," said Richard, himself a former pro defenseman. "He is a great skater and had his head up the entire time, but what really caught you was his consistency. He was the same player from the first session until the last. He stands a great chance to make our team."
Both players have signed Try-Out Agreements for the 2010 RiverHawks Training Camp, beginning on October 10th at the James Brown Arena in Augusta. There they will compete with around 30 others for a spot on the RiverHawks inaugural season roster. Included in Training Camp will be two pre-season games beginning with an October 15th matchup in Fayetteville, NC against the FireAntz. The RiverHawks then return to Augusta for an October 16th rematch against the FireAntz, after which the final roster will be decided.
The RiverHawks' inaugural season will begin with a weekend extravaganza October 22nd and 23rd. Information on season tickets and sponsorships for the 2010-11 season are available by visiting www.augustariverhawks.com and clicking on "Tickets", or by calling 706-993-2645.
